Considering Psychiatric “Help”
Originally posted on June 10, 2018
I’m a retired psychiatrist, and I’m suspicious of psychiatric “help.” I estimate that less than a fifth of those seeking help are healthy enough so that for them psychotherapy is an aesthetic option, one aimed at elaborating a richer life.
Then there are those who show deficits in rational thinking, those who "really need it.” Most of those who really need it don’t think they do; they don’t think the have deficits in rational thinking—i.e. “no insight”—and therefore wouldn’t make use of therapy. Furthermore, those “needing” “help” in rational thinking rarely consider their political judgement to be problematical. Alas for us all.
