Change “Psychodrama” to “Action Explorations”
Originally posted on May 10, 2018
Now that I thought about it for a long time, I suggest that we change the name of what we do from psychodrama to action explorations. The reasons are these:
1. The word “psychodrama”—or, indeed, any word with “psycho” in it, brings up associations to psychotic, psychoneurotic, psychopathic, psychological, “psycho,” psychoanalytic, intrusive, and redolent of all the cartoons that picture bearded middle-aged men with weird patients on couches.
2. The word “drama” is emotionally heightened, tainted by being over-eotional. The word used to be just something enacted. It could be funny. But now the word has changed meanings, to emotionally laden, “heavy.”
3. Many psychodramas are also sociodramas, and many overap with role playing.
4. It is even harder to apply to law or education or other non-medical or non-clinical settings.
5. It is sometimes useful for individuals or couples.
