Gary Larson, Cartoonist

This is the non-anniversary of Gary Larson’s retirement, which was around December 1994. Gee, it occurs to me that many people have grown quite up without knowing about this wonderful cartoonist. He introduced a madcap style of  cartooning that has been followed by others. When he left I felt bereft, but I just found two of his final cartoons, playing off the Wizard of Oz 1939 movie, in its final scenes.

There were all these characters he drew standing around. I realized I loved them.

Then he drew this one:

I remembered that I love this stuff—as do millions of others—and I wanted to honor his cartoons. I got a kick out of them. I like humor, jokes, cartoons, comic books, and the like, and this has been an influence I’ve shared with my age cohorts, but I shouldn’t take it for granted.
