Indeed, I’ve changed my vocational direction to the title of this piece! Back when I was into psychiatry, Freudian—really, post-Freudian— psychoanalysis still was dominant, and though I differed with many of the ideas, some I agreed with. Last year I taught what has become more standard and evidence-based, and after thinking about it, though I agree with what I call a minimalist approach, it is deeply dissatisfying.
Looking at old pictures from a time when I played Linus in a community theatre production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” based on the Peanuts comic strip and the cartoon work of Charles Schulz. I drew this while awaiting to go on stage. Some of Schulz’ cartoons used the trope of Lucy as amateur psychiatrist, “Psychiatry, 5 cents, and this came to mind.
