(I was in a local high school contest once, where I recited and enacted the \u201ctennis ball\u201d speech in Henry V.) One of my favorite passages was the one that I illustrated here when I was around sixteen years old. The style of cartooning was in part inspired by both the cartoonists and the general thrust of the early satirical\u00a0<em>MAD<\/em>\u00a0comic books. Occasionally they\u2019d take a poem, such as Poe\u2019s \u201cThe Raven,\u201d and illustrate it with silly pictures. So here was my version. (I found this among my old papers, yellowed with age.)]<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blatner.com\/adam\/cartoons\/7ages%20of%20man\/7ages.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"479\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>All the world&#8217;s a stage, and all the men and women merely players;<br \/>\nThey have their exits and entrances, and one man in his time plays many parts,<br \/>\nHis acts being seven ages:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blatner.com\/adam\/cartoons\/7ages%20of%20man\/infant.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"455\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At first the infant,<br \/>\nMewling and puking in the nurse&#8217;s arms.<br \/>\nThen, the whining schoolboy with his satchel and shining morning face,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blatner.com\/adam\/cartoons\/7ages%20of%20man\/childschool.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"455\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Creeping like snail, unwillingly, to school.<\/p>\n<p>And then the lover, sighing like a furnace,<br \/>\nWith a woeful ballad made<br \/>\nto his mistress&#8217;\u00a0<em>eyebrow<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blatner.com\/adam\/cartoons\/7ages%20of%20man\/lover.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"494\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then a soldier, full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blatner.com\/adam\/cartoons\/7ages%20of%20man\/soldier.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"497\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Jealous in honor,<br \/>\nSudden and quick in quarrel,<br \/>\nSeeking the bubble reputation,<br \/>\nEven in the cannon&#8217;s mouth!<\/p>\n<p>And then the justice, in fair round belly, with good capon lin&#8217;d;<br \/>\nWith eyes severe, and beard of formal cut,<br \/>\nFull of wise saws and modern instances; and so he plays his part.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blatner.com\/adam\/cartoons\/7ages%20of%20man\/justice.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"527\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The sixth age shifts into the lean and slipper&#8217;d pantaloon,<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blatner.com\/adam\/cartoons\/7ages%20of%20man\/6thpantaloon.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"447\" height=\"630\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With spectacles on nose,<br \/>\nand pouch on side,<br \/>\nHis youthful hose<br \/>\nwell sav&#8217;d,<br \/>\nA world too wide<br \/>\nfor his shrunk shank;<br \/>\nAnd his big manly voice,<br \/>\nTurning again<br \/>\ntowards childish treble,<br \/>\nPipes and whistles in his sound.<\/p>\n<p>Last scene of all that ends this strange eventful history<br \/>\nIs second childishness and mere oblivion,<br \/>\nSans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blatner.com\/adam\/cartoons\/7ages%20of%20man\/7thlast.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"457\" height=\"609\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blatner.com\/adam\/cartoons\/7ages%20of%20man\/end.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"515\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Words by William Shakespeare;\u00a0Cartoons by Adam Blatner) [Adam\u2019s note: As a teenager, I read the works of William Shakespeare, took a class in school, enjoyed the shaping of words, declaiming, enunciating, the feel of his rhythms.
