{"id":1647,"date":"2014-01-06T09:05:59","date_gmt":"2014-01-06T17:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blatner.com\/adam\/blog\/?p=1647"},"modified":"2014-01-06T09:05:59","modified_gmt":"2014-01-06T17:05:59","slug":"the-gremlins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blatner.com\/adam\/blog\/?p=1647","title":{"rendered":"The Gremlins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Related to my interest in fantasy characters, I was reading a book about the art of the cartoonist, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hermespress.com\/index.html?http%3A\/\/www.hermespress.com\/Books\/Andrae\/waltkelly.html\">Walt Kelly<\/a>, who created the Pogo comic strip, I also noted that in the late 1930s and early 1940s he worked as a Disney artist. (The publishers of this book, Hermes Press, also do many other books on the history of comics.) Anyway, I found out that around 1943 Disney published a book about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gremlin\">Gremlins<\/a> that was illustrated by Kelly, the book written by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roald_Dahl\">Roald Dahl<\/a> (who also was the writer of the <em>Charlie &amp; the Chocolate Factory<\/em>). Walt Kelley\u2019s cartoons \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Gremlins\">Gremlins<\/a>\u201d appeared in <em>Walt Disney\u2019s Comics and Stories<\/em> No 34 &#8211; 41, between 1943-1944. He worked on the story-board, but soon thereafter left to begin his Pogo comic strip. Here\u2019s one of the gremlin cartoons he did:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blatner.com\/adam\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/gremlinswaltkelly1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"gremlinswaltkelly1\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"gremlinswaltkelly1\" src=\"http:\/\/blatner.com\/adam\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/gremlinswaltkelly1_thumb.jpg\" width=\"497\" height=\"530\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blatner.com\/adam\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/gremlinswaltkelly2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"gremlinswaltkelly2\" style=\"border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"gremlinswaltkelly2\" src=\"http:\/\/blatner.com\/adam\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/gremlinswaltkelly2_thumb.jpg\" width=\"504\" height=\"185\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(There came a horror film in the 1980s with the title Gremlins, but it\u2019s darker and I don\u2019t like fear-inducing materials.) Fantasy, cartooning, imagination development\u2014all of that resonates with another part of my personality that some may say is not entirely of this world.
