Words and Images from the Mind of Adam Blatner

Dream Dynamics

For a few minutes between deep and eventful dreaming and full awaken-ness, I discovered myriads of fragments of old dreams, vivid but partial scenes! They were  extracts from dreams over scores of years! Reflecting on these, I had several insights: (1) Mind permeates multiple realities, and ordinary consciousness just skims the surface; (2) we live in a truly multidimensional realm, but by far most people live on the surface—not appreciating their own depths much less the deep beyond-realities of others. I only glimpse and consider that my experience is limited.

We try to record the complexity of the collective “history,” but we live so many lives, and there are so many histories (and biographies—which are types of history). Most of my own history would be terribly boring as not only is much pedestrian and boring to outsiders, but my story is so very multifaceted! Most people would be uninterested in aspects of the cosmos that interest me—and these are plentiful.

But this awareness of the semi-vividness of scenes—just bits of scenes—in long past dreams is awe-inspiring! Might it mean that mind is more fundamental than matter and capable of transcending time and space?

It suddenly occurs to me that, when I was a teenager, the most rebellious thing I could have done as your son is to become a reductionist, arguing that there is nothing but that which is measurable. I can imagine your face as you’d sputter, “my own son! Where did I go wrong?! You could have done drugs, or become a criminal… anything but this!”
