Mysteries in Nature

Originally posted on June 30, 2015

There was a lovely scene in our back meadow this morning. A little fawn scampered up to his mother and began to nurse. It took about ten minutes! After about four minutes the mommy ewe reached around and liked the baby’s bottom. What’s that about? Meanwhile the fawn is eagerly licking and thrusting its head up against the mommy’s abdomen. (Does this stimulate milk production?) The baby was so persistent and eager that it might be wondered if she hadn’t worked up a “powerful thirst.” Mama deer was all ho-hum. I suspect it felt good. All this time I also was aware that I didn’t understand a fair portion of what I was witnessing. Ah, nature!
